Are face shapes different for men and women?

Divide face length by cheekbone width. Under about 1.06 is round or square, around 1.38 is oval, above about 1.58 is oblong. Then divide jaw width by cheekbone width: close to 0.97 is square, below about 0.72 is heart or diamond. Those two numbers place any male face into one of the seven shapes, and the thresholds are printed below so the working can be checked.

02How to measure a male face

A soft tape measure and a mirror, or a front-facing photograph taken at arm's length with the camera level with your eyes. Hair off the forehead and off the ears, because hair covering either one is the most common reason a home measurement reads wrong.

These are styling judgements from proportion. Height, neck length and shoulder width all change the outcome, and none of them are face shape.

04Common mistakes when measuring a male face

Holding the phone below eye level lengthens the jaw and shortens the forehead. This pushes a genuine oval towards triangle.
Including sideburns or beard width in the jaw measurement. Measure the bone, not the hair.
Measuring over glasses. Frames sit on the cheekbones and can add 5 to 10 mm of width to the cheekbone reading.
Using a front-camera selfie at close range. The wide-angle lens distorts the centre of the face. Either use the rear camera with a timer, or stand at arm's length.
